Hello! anyway, this is my theory about the Happy Mask Salesman (HMS as I will call him). sit down and get ready, cause this is gonna be long.okay, first let me go over my theory on the origins of Majora’s Mask. but what’s that? I said this was about the HMS? shut up and listen! I’ll get to it! anyway, I believe that the mask has its origins in the Ikana Kingdom. I don’t really have the evidence for this, but roll with me for a second. anyway, eventually the people realized that the mask was bad news and sealed it away in the Stone Tower. many years pass. then the Garo/Ikana War happens. at some point of the war a Garo leader discovers a legend about a powerful artifact hidden in the Stone Tower. he believes this will help his people in the war, so he goes to get it. when he opens the doors to the Stone Tower Majora is released and proceeds to fuck up the land with a curse that leaves it in the state it is when Link arrives (ie. the not dying curse thing that turned everyone into skeletons and Garo ghosts). the evidence I have for this is that one: the Undead War has been going on for far too long for it to be something that Skullkid recently did, and the fact that the King of Ikana says something like “some fool thrust open the doors to the Tower and fucked us all up.” what happened to the young Garo Leader that did this? he got sealed in the Tower and is the mini-boss Garo you fight inside. anyway, now we are at the HMS. I have two theories about him: either A) he is a descendent of either Ikana or Garo decent whose family fled to Hyrule to escape the curse, or B) he being a mask enthusiast that finds out about the legend and wants to stop MM himself. I prefer Theory A, because it gives a reason for how he found out the legend, and because it gives him a motive: being he wants to right the wrongs of his ancestors, either the Ikana for creating the mask, or the Garo for releasing it. he finds out the legend some time after the events of OoT, and that is when he leaves on his journey. it could even be argued that the reason he is not in Hyrule during Adult Link’s adventure is because he is in Termina searching for the mask, or he got killed in the process. although that is a very flimsy possibility and is speculation. so that is my thoughts on the matter.
For those that said tl;dr, here is a summary, the HMS is a descendent of either the Ikana or Garo, who wants to find Majora’s Mask to right the wrongs of his ancestors.
AnonymousFrom what I’ve read over the years, this is an incredibly vague subject. It’s never really fully revealed. It just says that he went to ‘great lengths’ to obtain it. But this seems to imply that he would have had to unseal it from the shadows where it had been banished to many years in the past. I’ve never been able to figure out why he ended up taking it for himself. Part of me thinks he is just an insane collector, wanting it for its rarity. I don’t think that he gets as much blame as is due him. If he hadn’t taken it for himself, the entire disaster of Majoras Mask could have been avoided entirely. So in all reality, he’s actually a villain in that game. Kind of a neutral evil.
I’m pretty sure the story around Ben is an Alternate Reality Game (ARG), similar to what Microsoft did for Halo 2 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/I_Love_Bees. Some of those puzzles are still unsolved, so there are still opportunities to try your hand at them) or what they did for A.I. way back when.

It’s in the third story arc at the moment, so the game is ongoing and basically anyone can get involved, try to solve the puzzles and whatnot. I love me some ARGs!
By the way, Fuck Yeah Hyrule is awesome!
P.S. sorry if this ruins Ben for anyone… I didn’t mean it that way! I just wanted to let people know so they could get involved in the ARG if they wanted to. Even knowing it’s an ARG the whole story is still pretty creepy.
